How to Find Your Parked Car With Your iPhone
Your iPhone can remember where you parked by itself, but only under certain conditions, and never in an underground car park where you need it most. Here is when the automatic marker works, and how to make sure you find the car when it does not.

Apple Maps' automatic marker
Apple Maps can drop a Parked Car marker by itself when you leave the car. It does this when the iPhone disconnects from the car's Bluetooth or CarPlay, and only if all of these are on:
- Bluetooth, and the iPhone paired with the car's Bluetooth or CarPlay;
- Location Services, and Significant Locations under Settings, Privacy & Security, Location Services, System Services;
- Show Parked Location under Settings, Maps.
To find the car, search for Parked Car in Maps. Two things catch people out: a car with no Bluetooth or CarPlay never triggers the marker, and Apple Maps deliberately does not mark the car at places you park often, such as home or work.
Mark it yourself, every time
If the car has no Bluetooth, if you are in a hire car, or if you simply want to be sure, mark the spot yourself as you walk away. In Apple Maps, touch and hold the map to drop a pin and save it. Or use an app that saves a parking spot in one tap or by Siri, so you can do it with the keys in your other hand. A photo of the nearest street sign or landmark is a good backup.
Multi-storey and underground car parks
This is where phones fail. GPS barely reaches through a concrete floor, so a marker saved on level -3 can be off by a whole building, or not saved at all. What works:
- Mark the entrance, at street level, before you drive in, or as you walk out.
- Photograph the level and bay sign and the nearest lift or stairwell.
- Coming back, walk to the entrance by the map, then use the photo.
Our guide to GPS in tunnels and car parks explains why the signal disappears.
Walking back by compass
In a large car park, a festival field or a beach car park with no landmarks, a map is less useful than an arrow. An app that knows where the car is and which way the phone is facing can point straight at it and count the distance down as you walk. Hold the phone flat and away from metal, because a car park is full of things that pull a compass, as our compass accuracy guide explains. Within about 10 to 20 metres the arrow starts to swing, because that is about as close as phone GPS can place you; look up and use your eyes from there.

Common questions
Why did my iPhone not save my parked car?
Apple Maps marks the car only when the iPhone disconnects from the car's Bluetooth or CarPlay, with Bluetooth, Location Services, Significant Locations and Show Parked Location turned on. It also skips places where you park often, such as home or work.
How do I find my parked car in an underground car park?
GPS barely reaches underground, so mark the spot at the entrance before you lose the signal, and photograph the level and bay number. Walk back to the entrance by the map, then use the level and bay.
Can I mark my parking spot without CarPlay?
Yes. Drop a pin in Apple Maps, or use an app that saves your parking spot with one tap or by Siri, and shows an arrow and the distance back to it.
