What Vane does

Free and Pro

Free: every instrument, the head-up display, the offline map, GPX import, trip recording (the latest trip is shown), up to five saved marks, the Watch app and widgets.

Vane Pro: every recorded trip, unlimited marks, iCloud sync, automatic drive recording, mileage log export to CSV and PDF, trip insights, the flights passport, GPX export and trip pictures, the speed alert, UTM and MGRS grids, your own maps, the light planner, backtrack and the anchor alarm.

Built to be straight with you

How it is different

Most speedometer apps do one thing. Vane puts the instruments of a dashboard, a boat and a hiking watch in one app, works with no network, labels every reading with the sensor it came from, and has no ads in the free version. An independent comparison of the leading apps is in the best speedometer apps for iPhone.

Common questions

Is Vane free?

Yes. The speedometer, compass, altimeter, spirit level, head-up display, offline map and trip recording are free, with no ads and no account. Vane Pro is optional and can be bought once or as a monthly or yearly subscription.

Does Vane work without internet or mobile data?

Yes. GPS needs no data, and Vane's map of roads, railways, borders and towns is built into the app, so speed, heading, altitude, position and the map all work offline.

Does Vane work on Apple Watch?

Yes. The Apple Watch app shows speed, heading and altitude, and records walks, hikes, runs and rides as workouts with their route in the Health app and as trips in Vane on the iPhone.

How does Vane's speed alert work?

You choose a speed and Vane buzzes when you pass it. It does not rely on a road speed-limit database, which is a common source of wrong limits in other apps. The speed alert is part of Vane Pro.

What does Vane show in a tunnel?

Dashes, instead of a frozen or guessed speed, and the line under the dial says the satellites are gone. The compass and barometric altimeter keep reading, and the speed returns as soon as the signal does.

Does Vane collect my location?

No. Everything Vane records stays on your device, or in your own iCloud if you turn on sync. Vane sends only anonymous diagnostic reports, never your position or trips, and they can be turned off.

Which devices does Vane run on?

iPhone with iOS 17 or later, Apple Watch with watchOS 10 or later, and iPad.
