The Best Altimeter App for iPhone: What to Look For
Altimeter apps get more complaints about accuracy than any other instrument app we looked at, and the worst-rated of them carry the most ads. Here is what makes the number trustworthy, what to look for, and how Vane answers each point.

What people complain about
We collected the 2,300 most recent App Store reviews of 21 altimeter, compass, speedometer and GPS apps in August 2026. Altimeters stood out twice: for complaints about accuracy, and for how strongly the ratings follow the ads.
| Altimeter apps in the sample | Reviews at 3 stars or below |
|---|---|
| With ads (3 apps) | 35%, 45% and 72% |
| Without ads (2 apps) | 17% and 30% |
Most recent reviews per app, up to 150, from the App Store in August 2026. Across all 21 apps, those with ads averaged about 43% unhappy reviews and those without about 20%.
The accuracy complaints are mostly about the starting point, not the sensor. In one ad-supported altimeter app, 12 of its 67 recent low-star reviews were about the height above sea level being wrong, like the couple sitting side by side whose phones disagreed by 6 m. That is what an uncalibrated altimeter does, and a good app makes calibration easy and keeps it.
1. A barometer, not just GPS
GPS altitude is absolute but noisy: often off by tens of metres and jumping from fix to fix. A barometric altimeter is smooth and sensitive to a metre, and keeps reading indoors, underground and in a plane cabin. A good app uses the barometer for changes in height and GPS or a known elevation to anchor it. Our explainer barometric vs GPS altitude goes through both.
2. Calibration that is easy and holds
The weather moves air pressure by 10 hPa in a day without unusual effort, which an uncalibrated altimeter reads as about 80 m of climb. The fix is to set the height at a known elevation, a summit marker, a trail sign or a map spot height, or to enter the local sea-level pressure from a weather report. Vane offers both, and can compare your altitude with the height of the ground at your position when you are online.
3. The weather, read from the same sensor
A barometer is a weather instrument first. A steady fall in pressure over a few hours is one of the oldest signs that the weather is turning. Vane keeps a 48-hour pressure graph and warns you when the pressure is falling, which on a hill or a boat matters as much as your height.
4. No ads
The altimeter apps in our sample show the plainest pattern of all: the more ads, the worse the reviews, up to 72% unhappy for the most ad-heavy. Vane has no ads, in the free version or anywhere else.
5. Works offline, and in the air
The barometer and GPS need no data, so a good altimeter works on a mountain, at sea and in airplane mode. In a plane, Vane shows the cabin altitude from the barometer, usually 1,800 to 2,400 m, and the plane's own height from GPS when the phone can see the sky. See speed and altitude on a plane.
6. More than one number
People who use altimeters are hikers, skiers, cyclists and travellers, and they want more than the height: total climb on a walk, the runs and vertical of a ski day, the grade of a road. Vane records climb on every trip, counts ski runs and vertical from the barometer, and has a speedometer, compass and spirit level in the same app, with an Apple Watch app for altitude on the wrist.
7. Private
An altimeter has no reason to know who you are. Vane has no account, no ads and no tracking. Your trips stay on your iPhone, or in your own iCloud if you turn on sync.

Common questions
What is the best altimeter app for iPhone?
Look for one that uses the iPhone's barometer rather than GPS alone, lets you calibrate to a known elevation, accounts for the weather, works offline and has no ads. Vane was built around that list, and adds a speedometer, compass and spirit level, free with no ads.
How accurate is an iPhone altimeter?
For changes in height, a barometric altimeter is good to about a metre over minutes. For height above sea level it depends on calibration: the weather moves air pressure enough to shift the reading by tens of metres over a day or two, so set it at a known elevation when you can.
Which iPhones have a barometer?
Nearly every iPhone since the iPhone 6 has a barometric pressure sensor; the original iPhone SE is the exception. Apple Watch has one from Series 3.
Does an altimeter app work in airplane mode?
Yes. The barometer and GPS need no connection. In a plane, a barometric altimeter shows the cabin altitude, typically 1,800 to 2,400 m (6,000 to 8,000 ft), not the plane's; GPS shows the plane's own altitude when it has a fix by the window.
