Terms of Use
Effective 13 September 2026, updated 1 October 2026. These terms cover the Vane app for iPhone and Apple Watch, including beta versions distributed through TestFlight.
Your licence to use Vane is granted under Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement (the "Standard EULA"). These terms add to it. Where the two conflict, the Standard EULA prevails.
Using Vane on the road
- Do not look at, set up or touch Vane while you are driving. Set it up before you set off, or let a passenger use it.
- Mount your phone only where the law allows and where it does not block your view of the road. Before using the head-up display, check that a reflection on the windscreen is allowed where you drive.
- You are responsible for driving safely and for obeying traffic laws and road signs at all times. Nothing Vane shows changes that.
Speed
Vane's speed comes from satellite positioning. When the signal drops, a walking pace comes from the phone's step counter, and in a vehicle Vane stops showing a speed until the signal returns. It can differ from your vehicle's speedometer, and it can be wrong.
- Vane is not a legal speed reference. It is not calibrated or certified, and its readings are not evidence of the speed you were travelling.
- Vane does not know speed limits. It holds no speed limit data for any road.
- The speed alert is not a speed limit warning. It buzzes above a number you choose. It does not know the limit on your road, it may not fire, and a silent alert does not mean you are within the limit.
Always follow the posted limits and your vehicle's own speedometer.
Estimates and accuracy
- Without a satellite fix, walking pace comes from your step count and is an estimate. In a vehicle, the speed shows dashes until the signal returns.
- The compass is affected by magnets, metal and electronics nearby, including car mounts and phone cases.
- Barometric altitude changes with the weather as well as with height. Terrain elevations come from public elevation models and can be wrong.
- Sun and moon times, golden and blue hour are calculated and approximate.
- The built-in map is simplified. It shows coasts, borders, main roads and towns, not streets, and borders are drawn one way where countries disagree.
What Vane is not for
Do not rely on Vane for navigation at sea or in the air, for emergencies, for controlling a vehicle or any other device, for surveying or legal measurement, or for any decision where a wrong reading could cause injury, damage or loss. The anchor alarm is an aid and does not replace keeping watch.
Purchases and subscriptions
Vane Pro is sold through Apple's In-App Purchase as a one-time purchase or as a monthly or yearly subscription. A subscription is charged to your Apple Account when you confirm it and renews automatically unless you turn off auto-renew at least 24 hours before the current period ends. You can manage or cancel it in your Apple Account settings. Prices are shown in the App Store before you buy. Refunds are handled by Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.
Beta versions
Builds distributed through TestFlight are pre-release. They may be unstable, may lose recordings, and may change or remove features without notice. Vane Pro may be unlocked for testers in a beta build; that access is not a purchase and ends with the beta. Purchases made in a beta build are App Store sandbox purchases and are not charged.
Map and elevation data
- The built-in map is drawn from Natural Earth (public domain) and from GeoNames, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0. The GeoNames places were selected, ranked and simplified for the app.
- Terrain elevation: © DLR e.V. 2010-2014 and © Airbus Defence and Space GmbH 2014-2018 provided under COPERNICUS by the European Union and ESA; all rights reserved. The organisations in charge of the Copernicus programme by law or by delegation do not incur any liability for any use of the Copernicus WorldDEM-30 and WorldDEM-90.
- Terrain without a network: NOAA ETOPO 2022, public domain.
- Maps shown online are Apple Maps; their legal notices are on the map.
No warranty
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Vane is provided "as is" and "as available", without any warranty that its readings are accurate, complete or available at any particular time, or that it will work without interruption or error.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any fine, penalty, accident, injury, loss or damage arising from relying on Vane's readings, from using Vane while driving or navigating, or from Vane being unavailable or inaccurate. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, and nothing affects the rights you have as a consumer under the law of the country where you live.
Changes
If these terms change, the effective date above changes with them. Continuing to use Vane after a change means you accept the new terms.
