Effective 5 September 2026. This policy covers the Vane app for iPhone and Apple Watch.
The short version. Vane has no accounts, no servers and no analytics. It makes no network requests of its own. Every reading it takes — position, speed, heading, altitude, motion, pressure — stays on your device. We cannot see your data, because it never reaches us.
Vane reads sensors on your device in order to display instruments. All of it is processed on the device and stored on the device.

If — and only if — you turn on automatic drive recording, Vane asks for the Always location permission so it can notice a drive starting and ending while the app is closed, and keep the mileage log complete. This is optional, it is off until you enable it, and the data it produces is stored on your device like everything else. You can withdraw it at any time in Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services.
The Watch app asks for HealthKit permission for one narrow technical reason: watchOS keeps sensors running with the screen off only while a workout session is active, and starting such a session requires the authorisation to exist.
Vane requests that authorisation with empty read and write sets. It reads no health data and writes no health data. The permission is needed for the session to exist, not for the data behind it.
Vane's paid upgrade is sold through Apple's In-App Purchase system. Apple processes the transaction; we never see and never receive your payment details, card number or billing address. What we receive from Apple is aggregate sales reporting that does not identify individual customers.
Refunds are handled by Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.
Trip maps and place search are drawn with Apple Maps (MapKit), which is part of iOS. When a map is displayed, iOS contacts Apple to fetch map imagery and search results. That exchange is between your device and Apple, governed by Apple's Privacy Policy. We receive nothing from it.
Vane can import and export GPX route files, and can share trips. These actions happen only when you start them, and the files go only where you send them. Vane does not upload them anywhere.
If you use the Apple Watch app, Vane passes readings between your iPhone and your watch using Apple's device-to-device connection. That traffic stays between your two devices and does not pass through us.
Your data lives on your device for as long as you keep it there. You can delete individual trips inside the app. Deleting the app removes everything it stored, permanently. Because we hold no copy, there is nothing for you to request from us and nothing for us to delete on your behalf.
Vane is a general-purpose instrument app. It is not directed at children, and it collects no personal information from anyone — including children.
Privacy laws such as the GDPR and the CCPA give you rights to access, correct, export and delete personal data that a company holds about you. We hold none. Your data is on your device, under your control, and the app gives you the means to view, export and delete it yourself.
If this policy changes, the effective date above will change with it, and material changes will be noted in the app's release notes. We will not retroactively reduce the protections described here.
