How to Use Maps With No Signal on iPhone

Your iPhone's GPS works with no signal at all; it is the map that needs data. Download the right area before you lose coverage and you can still navigate, and a map built into an app covers the places you did not plan for.

GPS works; the map needs data

The satellites that tell your phone where it is send their signal to everyone, for free, with no mobile data involved. What stops working without a connection is the map underneath the blue dot: most map apps stream it from the internet as you scroll. Our guide to whether GPS works without internet explains the difference. So the trick is simple: have the map on the phone before you need it.

Apple Maps: download an offline map

From iOS 17, Apple Maps can save areas for offline use:

  1. Search for a place and tap it in the results.
  2. Tap Download, or More then Download Map.
  3. Adjust the area and tap Download. Maps shows the file size first.

You can also tap your profile picture or initials, then Offline Maps, then Download New Map. In the same place you choose whether downloads use mobile data and whether they update automatically.

Offline, Apple Maps still gives turn-by-turn directions for driving, walking, cycling and transit, arrival times, and place details such as opening hours. The limits: offline maps are available only in some areas, they use storage, they do not sync between your devices, and on Apple Watch they work only with the iPhone nearby.

Google Maps: offline areas

Google Maps can also save areas for offline use: search for a place, open it, tap More, then Download offline map. Offline areas need updating from time to time, which Google Maps can do by itself on Wi-Fi.

The catch with downloads

A downloaded map covers only the area you chose, and only if you remembered. The moments people need a map offline are often the ones they did not plan: the train that leaves the coast, the detour over the mountains, the ferry, the window seat on a plane, the country where roaming turned out to cost more than expected. On a train or a plane especially, you cross more ground in an hour than anyone downloads.

That is where a map built into an app earns its place. It covers the whole world all the time, so there is nothing to forget. It is not as detailed as a downloaded street map, so the two work best together: the built-in map to always know where you are, a downloaded area to find a street and navigate to it.

Common questions

Can I use Apple Maps offline?

Yes, from iOS 17. Search for a place, tap Download or More then Download Map, choose the area and download it. Offline, Apple Maps gives turn-by-turn directions for driving, walking, cycling and transit, arrival times and place details, in the areas it covers.

Does GPS work without mobile data?

Yes. GPS receives signals from satellites and needs no data. Without a connection the phone may take longer to find its first fix, and an online map will not load, but your position is there.

Is there a map app that works offline without downloading?

Some apps build a map into the app itself, so it works anywhere with no download. Vane's built-in map shows main and secondary roads, railways, rivers, lakes, borders, airports and towns, with your position, track and saved places. It is not a street map, so for turn-by-turn directions download an Apple Maps or Google Maps area too.
